Foreign Workers Can Now Study Without a Study Permit: What You Need to Know

Effective September 4, 2026, foreign nationals with a valid work permit may study in programs lasting six months or less, even if the program extends beyond the period of stay originally authorized when they first entered Canada.
Who Qualifies?
To benefit from this temporary policy, applicants must:
Hold a valid Canadian work permit.
Enroll in a study program that is six months or less in duration.
Continue to maintain valid work authorization in Canada.
The policy will remain in effect until December 31, 2027, unless revoked earlier by the government.
Why This Matters
For many foreign workers, gaining additional education can improve career prospects, support future immigration goals, and help meet the needs of Canadian employers. With approximately 1.5 million work permit holders currently in Canada, this policy could provide opportunities for thousands of workers to enhance their qualifications without the additional time and expense of applying for a study permit.
