Whether you're looking to work, reunite with family, or start fresh, a few important steps can help you begin your immigration journey in Canada.

  1. Determine which available immigration streams or programs align with your short and long-term goals. Do you only want to be in Canada temporarily under a work or study permit, or do you want to explore a permanent residence stream? Which province or territory would you prefer to move to? Make a list of the programs that match your goals, and their respective eligibility requirements.

  2. Assess if you meet the eligibility requirements of the selected program.

  3. Plan for the process. Ask yourself “What would an immigration officer or other decisionmaker need to see to decide on my application or issue?” Things you could put together now include identity documents, IRCC/CBSA or other government communications, language exam certificates, educational certificates, records of military or other governmental service, and any other information that gives a good idea of who you are and your history. Prepare a clear timeline and dates, travel history, work history, housing history, education history, and family relationships and names.

  4. Review the latest immigration policies and timelines to avoid mistakes and potential refusals. Follow official sources or work with a legal professional to ensure that you are taking the right steps and maximizing your chances of approval.
